【Mazda’s Master Craftsman】 Mazda’s clay modelers are specialists in the art of making design models out of clay. They make these 3D models based on design sketches and use them to examine a number of characteristics, including aerodynamic performance. This is a crucial step in the car-making process where the vehicle goes from being a picture on a piece of paper to becoming an actual object. Ryosuke Nozaki, one of Mazda’s chief modelers, is capable of sculpting clay to an accuracy of a few tenths of a millimeter. He has worked on a large number of clay models, including the Mazda SHINARI concept. At Mazda designers and clay modelers work on an equal footing to hone the final design together. This style of working is somewhat unique within the industry and has become another element of Mazdas strength.
