Media Influence To Blame For Violence in Classrooms MADURAI: With the murder of a Class VIII boy by a school dropout in Virudhunagar on Friday, the Southern districts have witnessed a total of three incidents of violence involving youngsters within a month. Although bad parenting, schooling and society are responsible for juvenile violence, it is high time we discussed the increasing negative influence of media on school students, say activists. The February 2012 incident in Chennai in which a 15-year-old boy killed his Science teacher for reprimanding him and confessed that he was influenced by a Bollywood movie, should have set alarm bells ringing, feel juvenile activists and psychiatrists. Dr Vikhram Ramasubramanian, a psychiatrist and director of Radianz Healthcare & Research Pvt Ltd in Madurai, says that it is during adolescence that one starts questioning things, getting rebellious and looking out for role models. “Glorification of violence that makes them insensitive to others’ pain,” he adds. An activist recalls a scene in a recent Tamil blockbuster, where the hero threatens the bad guys saying that he would get them killed by a 14-year-old boy, who will come out on bail, without punishment, under the Juvenile Justice Act.
