Meet Nabeela. She has traveled all the way to Washington from Waziristan with her father and brother to appear before Congress and get an answer to a simple question: Why is her grandmother not with her today? Nabeela was 8 when a drone attack killed her grandmother last year on the eve of Eid-ul-Adha in North Waziristan. Her father is a school teacher, and so were her forefathers. Her grandmother, Mamana Bibi, was a midwife - the only one in the entire village. When the tragedy struck, Mamana Bibi was preparing her grandchildrens clothes to wear the next day, Nabeelas father, Rafiq Ur Rehman, was returning from an errand in a nearby town, her brother, Zubair, was walking home from school, and Nabeela herself was learning how to cook Siwaiyaan. Nabeela and her family certainly do not meet the criteria for militancy. Theyre innocent, and their lives are not worth any less than victims of terror groups. Supporters of Malala are often seen as ignorant to the plight of collateral victims - they are not. Supporting victims of Taliban does NOT equate to them abandoning victims of drone strikes. Take that from us. Weve highlighted casualties of terrorism in the past, and here we are highlighting victims of counter-terrorism too.
