Meet the Serbs Monument to Prince Mihailo, the work of the Florentine sculptor Enrico Pazzi, was the first artistic monument in Serbia, placed in 1882 in front of the National Theater, at the site where the Stambol Gate (one of the gates of the Belgrade fortress) once stood. On the pedestal there are names of towns liberated from the Turks during his reign and relief scenes from the Serbian history (according to the plans of the architect Konstantin Jovanović). Mihailos right hand is pointing towards Prizren (the imperial city of medieval Serbia, province Kosovo and Metohia). There is a legend about this monument that says that during the unveiling one apprentice exclaimed: Wheres his hat? Hes riding a horse bare-headed! People say that Pazzi committed a suicide because of this remark. However this is not true since he left to his native Florence and wrote a beautiful letter with these words: With a touched heart I leave this small town, the lovely center of this young but knightly kingdom, sister of my country. I have an Italian soul and feeling and in my heart Im a delighted Serb.
