Meeting Minutes for August 22nd: Greetings Fellow Toastmasters! Fun meeting yesterday morning – all in our places with sun shining faces, well after we got our morning coffee anyway! The theme of our meeting was “Milestones”. The meeting roles were filled by the following members: Toastmaster – Ron Table Topics – Jan Table Topics Speakers – Horst, Erin, John Speakers – Larry, Woody Master Evaluator – Shirley Evaluators – Cynthia, Sheri Table Topics: Milestones provided by Jan Horst won Best Table Topics Speaker when he told us about his milestone – his 1st 40 hr/wk job. Horst shared it happened when he ran out of money when he was in college. He was forced to skip his dream of traveling around the world. He got a job at 3M as a lab tech for a whopping $76 a week. He shared the details of the job and how when he decided to go on and get his degree they offered some choices. This made him think what else is out there and we are thankful he did – that’s why he’s now in Pine Island! Erin told us about her milestone – owning her first new home. She said it gave her a feeling of accomplishment and she was really excited about finally owning her own new home. You could see her eyes were filled with excitement as she told us she loves to paint and now she can paint anytime she wants – bathrooms, living rooms and beyond. I think a lot of the excitement was in getting to choose her own colors! John told us about his milestone of own his first new car. He shared that working for IBM and collecting a weekly mileage check turned him into a caraholic starting with a new 1967 Pontiac GTO. From that point on until taking a plant job in Rochester in 1978 there were 17 new cars. Don’t you hate it when the new car smell is gone! Speakers: Larry won Best Speaker with is speech “Are you ready?”. Larry shared that he really likes history and especially history about ship wrecks and sunken treasure. He shared the details about the shipwreck Nuestra Senora De Atocha (The Atocha Story). Rather than giving you my version, a video is attached below. Excellent speech of bringing history to life. Woody’s speech “Racism, not what you think” was timely, informative and interesting. Wood shared the history of racism – the definition as it was applied by law – the attributes were being free, owning property, and being civilized. It was not about color at first. Woody shared examples of racism today and how it can be addressed. He shared his thoughts on political division and more. He closed by telling us we need to focus on being united, not divided. Cynthia won Best Evaluator. Hope to see you all on September 5th – Remember, no meeting next Friday! John
