Memories of the VA Beach Concert - 31 Oct 1970: I dont seem the have the amazing memory that many of you have. This concert was 44 years ago, and only select highlights stand out in ANY of my life memories. I saw Clapton a few months ago, and I cant tell you which songs he did without looking it up on the Internet! But I digress... I made a last minute decision to go to see D&D after hearing a rumor that it was Claptons band. Being a huge Cream fan, I thought that I would be treated to a number of songs from that era. As it turned out, I was disappointed to realize that the only songs that I recognized were from Blind Faith & his solo album (dont ask which!!). The standout song of the evening for me was Key to the Highway which I had not heard before, but have loved ever since. The Dome in VA Beach was a very small venue that seemed more like a school auditorium. Folding chairs on a level floor and a small stage maybe 3 feet high. The audience was politely seated, quiet, and listening to the music. I was about 10 rows back toward the right side & decided to walk to the stage to take some photos. It was an era when no one seemed to care whether you had a camera or not, or that you were the only person standing in front of the stage taking pictures! I had just gotten my first 35mm camera - a fixed lens Yashica - and had not fully mastered its controls or limitations. After getting 7 or 8 pictures, the flash stopped working, and I didnt have the skills to use available light. My camera probably was not capable of it anyway. I did notice that every time I lifted the camera to take a picture, Clapton looked away - presumably to not be blinded by the flash. I also remember (although Bobby may prove me wrong) that he broke a high E string during Key to the Highway and he continued on with the broken string until the end of the song. The photos that I was able to get were all from the right side of the stage, so I only got shots of Eric and Carl, and part of Bobbys head in the background. Wouldnt it be great to go back in time with a modern digital camera with HD video and do it right? I did get one really bad picture of the opening act Toe Fat, but who cares? Thats about it - nothing left in that brain closet but dust! Below are a few shots from the concert:
