Memory Post #18 It may be coincidence or it may be fate, but the name Philo has a family connection for me. Have you ever heard of anyone or anything named Philo? It just so happens that at one point and time, when my dad was rehabbing real estate properties, he created a business called Philo! He merged his name with my moms: PHIL + MARLO = Philo! Coincidence or fate? Philo Vance was the fictitious New York detective featured in a dozen S.S. van Dine novels between 1926 and 1939. Van Dine himself is featured in the stories, accompanying Vance during his investigation and recounting the stories to us through first person. Vance and Vine Dine make up a detective team, not unlike the detectives in Ellery Queen or Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson. S. S. Van Dine is actually the pseudonym of New Yorker Willard Huntington Wright (an art/ drama critic and magazine editor) who wrote the first three novels while in addiction recovery. His detective stories, like many books by authors who write multiple novels, are very formulaic. Each is entitled The X Murder Case where X = some 6 letter word. He considered them as intellectual puzzles to be solved. They sometimes were based on real crime cases and he often included diagrams and maps in the books. 15 Philo Vance murder mysteries were made into movies, including The Garden Murder Case in 1936. The movies continued to be produced even after Van Dine himself had died and the stories had parted from popularity. youtu.be/_bzmdXVQ5yM
