Metformin is an oral anti-hyperglycemic agent ( NOT ORAL - TopicsExpress

Metformin is an oral anti-hyperglycemic agent ( NOT ORAL HYPOGLYCAEMIC ) approved by the FDA for treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. ….Unlike the sulfonylureas, metformin does not cause hypoglycemia because it does not increase insulin concentration. - It decreases blood glucose both by inhibiting hepatic glucose production and by increasing glucose utilization in the peripheral tissues. - It is a ( category B ) drug for use in pregnancy but is sometimes used to treat type 2 diabetes in pregnant women !!. A rational approach to the use of metformin would be to use it in women with PCOS, infertility, and insulin resistance who have not responded to standard treatments such as weight loss and clomiphene..- Three randomized clinical trials have shown that the combination of metformin plus clomiphene is effective for inducing ovulation.
