Michel Gondry Reseacrch Michel Gondry was born on May 8th, 1963. He was born in Versailles, Yvelines, France. Whilst growing up in Versailles, Michel and his family were “very influenced by pop music” and when he was young, he aspired for his career to be in the creative department, with his two favourite choices being either an artistic painter or, as a more creative choice, an inventor. In order to pursue his creative dreams, Michel transferred to an official art school in Paris. It was here where he learned to develop his graphic skills. It was also at this school where he met good and close friends that would later proceed to make a band with him. This band was a pop-rock band named Oui-Oui. Through this band, he was able to release two albums called ”Chacun tout le monde” which translates to “each and every one of us” and the other album simply being called “Formidable”. Several singles were also released by the band. However the fame was short lived as the band decided to separate in 1992 and the band members all went their separate ways. Even though Michel was only the drummer of the band, he was also responsible for the editing of their music videos. These videos allowed a clear look into Gondry’s world, showing how his work was influenced by his childhood in the 60’s. When the famous Icelandic music director and composer Björk saw some of Michel’s work on MTV, she asked him to help create her first solo music video for a song named “Human Behaviour” along with 5 other music videos after “Human Behaviour” was such a huge success. This allowed Michel to go on to be involved in videos from other artists and companies, like Coca-Cola and Adidas. After looking at several of Michel’s videos, including “Haircut Mouse” and “Is the man who is tall happy?” I found his work to be very scruffy and unorganised. I understand the use of the simplicity and randomness in his videos in order to make them entertaining and stand out, but I simply didn’t see the talent in his work. This was until I found his music video for Björk called “Crystalline”. In this video, I found that the simplicity of his stop-motion tactics and simple drawing techniques extremely effective as they gave colour, entertainment and a very sci-fi but down to earth feel to the video. This allowed me to connect very well with the video as it allows you to see that even simple techniques can result in brilliant effects if your heart is truly shown in your work. _______ FOLLOW LIPSapp Hits92 Radio _______ FB: r-js/1nNhEli / TW: r-js/1k0nYET / Listen to LIPSapp Hits92 Radio r-js/1dOIQ18 #frankocean #edsheeran #elliegoulding #ournameisfun #maroon5
