Michel Gondry can be a tough sell, seeing as to how he favors whimsical animation over directed plotting. This is an adaptation of a French surrealist novel from 1947, and Gondry allows his inner stop-motion animator go nuts amongst the company of some handsome Gallic actors, including Romain Duris and Audrey Tautou. The sentiment of amour fou is all over this, as well as some innovative set pieces and design aspects, but it cant help being lighter than air by the end.
