Michelle AlexanderI am often asked: Where are the lawyers? Why arent more lawyers speaking out boldly, exposing the injustice of the system, and taking action to transform it? The answer to the puzzle begins with law schools which generally train students to think like lawyers and accept - not question - the system and work within it to secure wins (not justice) for paying clients. Fortunately, there are some courageous souls who refuse to be bought and who speak out for justice in our courtrooms every day, including many public defenders who are on the front lines and know all too well the horrors of our criminal injustice system. Prof. Alexander is is right on point, and something I deal with on a daily basis fighting for the rights of individuals both at the Courthouse and Statehouse against Big, powerful corporate and government entities who employ teams of lawyers to hide evidence, specialize in delay tactics, and/or manipulate the system to allow them to steamroll the rights of average people. While I strongly believe that everyone is entitled to a vigorous representation, it disturbs that lawyers who should be seeking truth, justice, and equality are to often only seeking Benjamins, Bentleys, and accolades from their wealthy suitors. #StandUpJustice
