Microsoldering How To Picture Set: iPad Air Charge Port. This was a prior repair attempt iPad Air dock connector/charge port job from today. It was immediately obvious what had gone wrong--the old connector was still soldered to the pads. This is a common problem for beginners. If you see *anything* other than shiny silver pads in a row, youre not ready for your new connector. You cant overlay the new on the remnant of the old and make good electrical connections. On iPad Air and iPod Touch 5th gen, the connectors have a layer of heat resistant coating on top. Here, I used a wide tip with plenty of fresh solder and flux to rub at the connector until the solder below finally started to flow and release the old connector. Then tin the pads and apply new connector. Wick solder from the pads up through the new connector--not just painting more on top. Done, tested, working!
