Migrant workers are those people migrated from the rural areas to the urban areas in search of work to sustain themselves. They are the real heroes who make the urban life comfortable to the larger section of the society. Their cheap labor is made use of to construct all the roadways, gutter lines, industries, housing societies, palatial bungalows, cybercafés, educational institutions. They clean our cities… They wash our cloths, utensils, mop floors of our houses, offices etc. And at the end of the day, we see them on the road side or elsewhere in the city struggling to cook their ‘rotlo’ (food). They are at the mercy of others in getting water for drinking and bathing and firewood for cooking. They make the city beautiful and shining with all the civil amenities over a period of time. In the beginning they are in great demand because of the cheap labor extracted from them but once they start settling down in huts they become a nuisance for the affluent society and sooner or later bulldozers run over their huts and they are pushed in to other developing urban areas and this process goes on and on till they reach at the death bed. The health and educational needs of the migrants are also deplorable. Because of the lack of awareness about the value of education and the low income, vast majority of the children are not sent to school. And even among those who are sent to school, most of them drop out of school before completing their primary education. The few who complete their primary education in the government run primary schools do not know to read and write all the alphabets of Gujarati language. xaviersmigrants.org
