Milk abhishekam? Spare a thought for those starving: HC :- It’s a state where people empty pots of milk on idols of gods and statues and posters of actors and politicians to show devotion and respect. Frowning on the practice, the Madras high court on Wednesday said those performing milk abhishekam should spare a moment for the plight of millions of people and children who go without food, milk or shelter. A division bench of Justices R Sudhakar and V M Velumani, passing orders on a PIL seeking permission for holding the ritual in a Trichy temple, said, “This court is of the view that in many parts of our country, people are suffering without food, shelter or even milk for children.” Emphasising the need to use food items such as milk judiciously, Justice Sudhakar, who wrote the judgment, said, “The petitioner and other villagers should be aware that such an essential commodity should be used for the benefit of children, orphans, widows and destitutes, besides offering to the deities.” The bench, however, conceded that there could be no restriction on performing pujas in a temple under the control of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department. It then directed the temple authorities to consider the plea of the organisers to conduct the milk abhishekam festival. K Muthurathinam of Trichy district filed the petition seeking permission for himself and others at Bharathi Nagar village to perform several rituals, including milk abhishekam, at the Arulmighu Bhagawathi Amman Mariamman Ilayandi Amman temple on April 27. - The Times of India.
