Millions of sheep and hundreds of thousands of cattle are exported - TopicsExpress

Millions of sheep and hundreds of thousands of cattle are exported live from Australia every year. This cruel trade causes intense suffering to the animals and thousands die before reaching port. World Animal Protection wants to see an end to the cruel practice of live exports. To protect animals Australia should transition to a more humane chilled and frozen meat trade which would see animals spared long sea journeys and slaughtered at home according to Australian standards. Independent research has shown a chilled and frozen meat trade would create more jobs and support our economy. Instead the Minister for Agriculture is concentrating on opening up new overseas markets for even more live animals and reducing paper work for exporters. Worse, he has said he is preparing to further unravel the regulations that govern the trade and even considering an exemption to allow a resumption of exports to Saudi Arabia. Who can forget the horror in 2003 when Saudi Arabia refused a shipment of 57,000 Australian sheep leaving them stranded at sea for 3 months where around 6,000 died. Our farm animals don’t deserve this. We need your urgent help to steer him off this course! Australian farm animals need you to remind the Prime Minister of the depth of public concern for all the animals that suffer horribly in the live export trade. Before decisions are taken to make things even worse for the animals, we need you to urgently call on the Prime Minister to re-focus the governments priorities. Tell the Prime Minister you want an end to the cruelty of live exports and for the government to put its efforts into developing the alternative trade in chilled and frozen meat. While the government allows live animal exports to continue, the regulations must not be weakened and there should certainly not be new markets opened up or trade to Saudi Arabia resumed. Time is running out. Please spare a minute to send a letter to the Prime Minister using our simple letter-writing tool. Together, we can show the government the urgent need to strengthen existing live export regulations and to work towards an end to live export altogether. Thank you for supporting the animals.
