Mitchell Jovic has been in a critical condition in the Princess - TopicsExpress

Mitchell Jovic has been in a critical condition in the Princess Alexandra Hospital since being shot at Rochedale two weeks ago and was given little chance of recovery. But the 29-year-old suddenly woke from his coma and spoke to medical staff at 1am Sunday, a police source said. The news came as a shock to police who were told Jovic would likely remain in a vegetative state after he was shot during an incident sparked by a stolen ride-on mower. Jovic was shot on October 21 by a Springwood-based officer in Priestdale Rd, Rochedale, during a routine call-out. Up to five shots were fired at Jovic, who was hit in the head and arm after the vehicle he was driving allegedly veered toward the officer and a police colleague. He is expected to receive months of further care and rehabilitation before he can be released from hospital. When he woke from his coma he was asked by medical staff if he knew who he was and he said his name. Initially after he woke, police were put on guard outside intensive care in case he was able to flee. But it became clear he would require extensive further treatment and he is no longer being guarded. Police are not expected to make any attempt to interview him during his treatment in hospital. Queensland Police Union president Ian Leavers said at the time that the two officers responded “professionally” after the car sped towards them without warning. “Both officers were in fear of their lives and acting instinctively, as they are trained to do,” Mr Leavers said. “It’s easy for people to comment on these sorts of things, but when you are confronted with life-threatening situations, each and every one of us would respond differently at that point of time. couriermail.au/news/queensland/rochedale-gunshot-victim-stuns-doctors-as-he-wakes-from-coma-and-answers-question/story-fnn8dlfs-1227111436765
