Modified my Lightning Boy Audio Rectified Leveler. It had the typical LA2A style amplifier topology, but yesterday I was experimenting and rewired it to accommodate a different type of output tube. During playback of the before and after recordings I realized the new output tube yields a greater degree of detail in the sound and appears to have a more balanced frequency response. I made the decision to use this new tube because I felt it would present a lower noise floor while also offering higher output volume (based on the technical specifications of the tube). I wanted more juice because I like using the RL as a mic preamp. The new tube adds only .1dB of added gain, but because it has a more balanced response, it sounds like its much louder than that. The noise floor appears to have remained the same low level despite the increase in volume... which is a good thing. I think the new sound of the leveler will allow it to be more flexible in the studio and I certainly love the idea of greater detail!
