Mom...Its MLK day. Theres no school. stated a certain 12 yr old boy. Uhhh....yah..theres school today. I replied. Where? check 12 yr old responded. HERE. said I. 12 yr old walks away in defeat. The older kids know better than to ask abt random traditional school holidays being accounted for in our schedule. We DO NOT follow a traditional school . And, truly, all teachers had a small unit study about MLK last week. So why a day off? Do we all really think the masses are using their free time to honor him in some way today? Do we also spend free time honoring Presidents on Presidents Day? We know the answer to this. I dont need a holiday to take time off of scheduled learning to teach kids about major world figures. This stuff is already in our curriculum. ... MLK, George Washington, Edison, Churchhill, Benjamin Franklin, Marie Curie, Van Gough, Henry VIII ..... I dont need a holiday to teach already pertinent info. Attending parades or rallies or a public speech about said honored figure can be over-rated. Imho.Id rather they learned the facts themselves then research further if theres additional interest. If they then chose to go to a parade or rally then I will first in line to get them there. There is a wee bit to be said about some self-interest driven learning. It develops areas of passion quickly but is balanced out by required areas of study even if not in an area of passion.
