Monaghan United 3-1 Swilly Rovers SFAI National Cup 2nd Round Monaghans U14 team is possibly the strongest for years with a wide array of talent. It is then hardly surprising that they overcame a strong Donegal side on a cold evening on the astro park. Gary Myers scored a brilliant left footed volley from just outside the area after the ball was cleared from a Monaghan corner. They dominated for much of the first half with Aaron Mulligan and Lubula Kwima playing excellently in midfield. Shane Duffy also had a brilliant game between the sticks for United pulling off several good saves when Rovers did threaten. Martynas Pilvinis and Cormac McKenna were very influential for United, first defensively as they prevented Swilly from many attempts on goal and secondly their technical ability proved key to Monaghans play. Indeed it was Cormac who scored the second for the Mons heading home from an excellent Leon McCabe set piece. It was 2-0 at half time and Monaghan looked comfortable with their 2 goal cushion. Though Swilly got back in the game when a defensive error allowed the Swilly striker to fire home with an excellent strike from the edge of the box. As Rovers threatened to make a comeback Monaghan brought on Eli Ward and Darren Geoghegan who stabalized Uniteds game. Eli in particular was composed on the ball and dribbled through several Swilly defenders at ease before having his shot saved by the Donegal keeper. He then set up Darren who had a great chance from close range but again the keeper stopped it. Leon had another opportunity with a free-kick at the edge of the box but his effort was tipped over the crossbar by an excellent Swilly keeper. Finally Monaghan got the goal they needed when after a scramble in the box, Cormac McKenna wrapped his left boot behind the ball to hammer it into the back of the net to bring his tally on the night to two. Patrick McCarron ran the line well in the first half and man marked Swillys danger-man in the second half when he looked most lively. Jack OHanlon, Colin Peppard and Fearghal Kearns all played very well in their stints at full back while Corey McArdle was an ever-present threat up front until he came off in the second half. Both centre-halves deserve the Man of the Match honours in this instance, Martynas and Cormac were rock solid throughout the game and as dangerous with the ball. Monaghan United Squad: Shane Duffy, Fearghal Kearns, Jack OHanlon, Colin Peppard, Martynas Pilvinis, Cormac McKenna, Aaron Mulligan, Leon McCabe, Darren Geoghegan, Eli Ward, Patrick McCarron, Cillian Woods, Nicolai Boboc, Kazkile, Lubula Kwima, Ryan Aughey, Corey McArdle, Gary Myers.
