Monarch populations are estimated to have fallen by as much as 90 - TopicsExpress

Monarch populations are estimated to have fallen by as much as 90 percent during the past two decades. Destruction of native milkweed east of the Rookie Mountains is a primary factor as milkweed is the only plant Monarchs will use for reproduction. Milkweed is being destroyed due to our increased use of crops genetically engineered to withstand herbicides that kill native vegetation, including milkweed. Monarchs are also threatened by widespread pesticide use and logging of mountain forests in central Mexico and coastal California where Monarchs overwinter. Now some very well intended groups have called for the listing of Monarchs as endangered and while this seems pretty straight forward with many feeling if we let our federal government take over and list the Monarch that this will fix the problems. While this is a very well intended action it is not well thought our or realistic. The absolute best actions would be to establish a policy of allowing or even subsidizing citizens to grow milkweed and monarchs.
