Monday Musings WATURI WAMBOYE RELATIONSHIPS MATTER- MY STORY Before you dismiss this as a story about love and the work place, relax. It is not that kind of love between a man and woman but a love and respect for people you meet in the journey of life. I have been sharing on the importance and need to possess soft people skills. Today, I will share with you a real personal experience as to how relational skills have built me to the place I am and also to the place I want to be. I came to know ATB in my final year as a campus student. I attended one of the career talks held at the University of Nairobi. I was accompanied by my friends and we secured seats at the front to get as much knowledge as we could. We did. We asked questions and gave our thoughts and comments making us stand out. Before long we were part of the ATB family. At ATB I have gained valuable knowledge on preparedness for career and resume writing skills. When it was time for me to apply for a job, I took up the challenge to start as intern in a growing management consulting and at the interview the same relational skills learnt such as being polite and active listening complemented my academic skills to get the job. At the work place, the interviewer looks to see whether they connect or relate with you. At the end of the day, people are the resource behind companies. Everyone desires to work with people who not only get the job done, but are also a joy to working with. Consider this, you spend close to 8 hours with someone everyday. You would like to have positive working relations to keep things going during the everyday grind of work. Remember: People matter, more than you think!
