As Frank unravels the story behind the first photograph taken of a giant squid, he finds himself pulling on the thread of a number of different stories: his own life, his grandfather’s, a number of historical figures both real, imagined, and re-imagined. It’s a book about the leaps we take when trying to fill in and figure out a mysterious and mercurial past. This is a book for fans of lyrical essays and for those who don’t mind getting lost in storytelling and beautiful language. The NYTimes recently called it “slyly charming” and I think you’ll find yourself charmed, too.
