Moortown Monkeys 9 v 8 Morley Moortown Meerkats 8 v 5 Morley Monkeys 4 v 4 Meerkats What a fantastic morning we all had at Far Moss today, as our mercurial Moortown under 8s maintained their unbeaten record since the start of the season. A lot of new lads have started this year, but the whole squad are now gelling really well, and after this morning, Im struggling to think of any novel superlatives to describe this truly talented bunch of individuals. We had a turn out of 12 lads, so made two teams - the Monkeys and the Meerkats. Both our teams won their matches against a decent Morley outfit, followed by a genuine draw between our two sides! It was a fitting way to end the morning and to crown the celebration of rugby we all enjoyed today. The Monkeys team consisted of - Matty, Anri, Jakey, Joe, Dylan and Sid The Meerkats team was made up of- Calum, Shamari, Jaedon, Archie, Thomas and Fletch We were treated to some brand new cones (lol!) to use to lay out the pitches, and we decided to make it a bit smaller than usual. We also managed to use two proper touchlines. What this meant was that both teams had to really concentrate to not go into touch, and it was great for their development. Some lads from all three teams struggled a bit with this, but some of our silkiest runners soon got to grips with it, and displayed some lovely swerving and stepping to stay in the field. Morley never quite got to grips with it, which was the result of our fast, aggressive and relentless tagging machines on both Moortown sides- we harassed them, we hounded them, we pinned them back, we forced them to the touchline, and we forced them to make a lot of errors. Reffing the matches, I felt like I was constantly shouting tag such was our standard of discipline in defence. All this was led by Shamari the Destroyer (as christened by Jonny - whatever happened to him!!?) with his Herculean physique and power, and he duly won Tagger of the week for his stupendous efforts in defence. Young Shamari could quite easily have won Player of the week too with his barnstorming runs, which had the Morley lads ducking for cover every time he got going with the ball. Hes a gracious kid as well though and he always makes sure he hands the tags back to the opposition players. Hes a great find for the Moortown club. Player of the week went to Anri who has quietly impressed ever since effortlessly slotting into the side when he made his debut against West Leeds. His concentration and discipline are awesome, and he has developed a body-swerve style all of his own, making sure he sways his hips each time a would-be tagger comes near him. Good boy! Keep it up! Fletch managed to get himself amongst the trophies for the second consecutive week, being voted Parents Player of the week! Well done Fletch, and you deserve it mate because youve really come on since the start of the season! Fletch produced some cracking all round stuff today and I think he won quote of the day too with Get em! as he led the troops into tagging battle. In the second game against Morley, the rugby was so good that I lost track of time in the second half because I couldnt bring myself to close time on the champagne rugby on display! It was just great all-round stuff but what stood out this morning was the exquisite side-stepping by the likes of Dylan, Calum and Matty. Even more than that though, my overriding memory of the morning is the dramatic running at speed towards the try-line, with brilliant passing and support, followed by a dramatic dive to score the try! A few of the lads scored with a dive this morning and, I know its hard to believe, but I think they even quite enjoyed it!! Lads, Im proud of each and every one of you. There were so many great moments this morning that I could sit here all day writing this (Im not far off now, lol!) and I would still forget to mention some!! At this rate, were going to be able to start working on set-pieces and tactics in training! Finally, a big shout out to all the support were getting from our army of kit washers (I mean managers!!), score keepers, time keepers, trophy log record keepers, touch judges, first aiders, cash collectors, parent-supporters, and of course, coaches! The contribution they all make is making a big difference, and is helping to create a real feel-good factor down at Far Moss these days- especially when were on the front pitch!!! (Under 7s report to follow!) DONT STAND THERE LIKE A BANANA!
