More fall semester classes, including my Ecocultural Communication course (now offered in the fall annually): LOBO GARDENS COURSE, SUST 402*, CRN#52071 *No pre-requisites* When: Monday 14:00-15:50 and Friday 8:00am-11:10am Locations: Monday DSH317 and Friday Lobo Gardens (behind the UNM Real Estate office) Dates: August 18th to October 6th In this class students will learn the basis of sustainable horticulture for high desert areas with a cultural approach. Students will be involved in hands-on gardening and will learn principles of sustainable horticulture (from seeding to harvesting). Most importantly, this class will provide a cultural/historical perspective of farming in the Southwest. The objective of this approach is to create a deep understanding of where our crops come from, the importance of heritage and Native American farming and the value of heirloom crops for the coming generations. Instructor: Warner Orozco, Ph.D. Horticulturalist, [email protected] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ecocultural Communication: Humans & The Environment, CJ313, CRN#49780 *No pre-requisites* When: Wednesdays 16:00-18:30 Location: COMMJ121 This course explores the cultural and communicative ways that we inform, shape, and shift our relations with “the environment.” We’ll look at human-nature relations as both actively socially constructed and as deeply materially experienced. While we will examine dominant Western environmental discourses, this course also focuses on alternative and transformative cultural discourses that might support more mutually sustainable or restorative human-nature relations. Class will involve critical and creative exploration as well as out-of-the-classroom experiences in the wider community. The course is part of C&J’s new Environmental Communication BA emphasis, but can be taken by any UNM student. No prerequisites. Instructor: Professor Tema Milstein
