More football countdown ... I covered the XFL experiment in Birmingham. When the league was announced, I figured it would either be a great success or a colossal failure, leaning toward the latter. Birminghams team was originally supposed to be nicknamed the Blast -- a reference to Birminghams blast furnaces and steel legacy but a not-so-wise choice for a city better known worldwide for a notorious bombing that killed four little girls and the Eric Rudolph bombing, as my Post-Herald colleague Jason Young wrote in smack-a-licious column.
