More for the Royals fans: Theyre going to salary arbitration with Greg Holland and Eric Hosmer. If youre a casual fan, and IIRC, players are controlled by their clubs for their first six years in the major leagues. Theyre not allowed to sign with other teams. For the first two seasons, they generally get paid the mínimum, unless otherwise agreed. Then for the next four seasons they are eligible for salary arbitration if the team and player cant agree on a salary. The way it works is that the club proposes one figure and the players agent proposes another, and the arbitrator has to pick one or the other rather than splitting the difference. This forces both sides to make a relatively reasonable proposal. A common way to avoid going to arbitration is for the team and player to agree on a long-term contract that buys out his arbitration-eligible years, and usually extends him past his seventh-year eligibility for free agency. The Royals did this with Perez and Escobar. A player who is not under contract can choose to become a free agent, and sign with any other team, after his sixth year in the major leagues.
