More horse money saving: Let your horse eat free forage.. Grass. Letting them eat in the pasture saves you 40-90$ of hay each month per horse. When letting a horse out to pasture make sure fencing is save and that you continue to monitor and care for them. Dont let them be a neglected pasture horse. Dont expect all horses to get all the calories they need from grass, monitor their weight and supplement with feed if needed. For horses that tend to the chubby side (but not I.R) put a grazing muzzle on. - When feeding hay use the giant square bales instead of the little ones. A flake from one of those will usually need to be split in half to make a meal for one horse (10 lbs). A good way to split them is with a pitch fork. At 50$ for a 900 pound giant bale its .055$ a lbs vs .15$ a lbs for a lil square bale. Save 50$ a month per horse - Keeping the horse out all the time with a run in shed will eliminate shavings costs. Even just having them out all the time except when its nasty weather (if you dont have run ins) will drastically reduce shavings costs. If you get bagged shavings you save about 20$ a month.
