More than a Museum The Doleman Black Heritage Museum, Inc. is answering the call of many residents who enjoyed the jazz series started by the City of Hagerstown which ran 2008-2011. These concerts were enjoyed by many-best of all they were free and brought many to Hagerstown’s City Center. After checking with the City and learning that it would not be sponsoring the concert series this year, the Friends of DBHM, with the consent of the DBHM board of directors, decided to swing into action and bring the concert series back. DBHM, which has limited staffing and financing, agreed to host the event if they could garner 100% sponsorship for the full event. The Friends of DBHM took on the charge to find sponsors and from the first request; Hagerstown Washington-County Convention Visitors Bureau was on board and in a big way, then came Steve Swayne of State Farm Insurance, then Northwestern Mutual, and then the City. Thanks to the generosity of these partners, DBHM is pleased that it will be able to host “A Night of Jazz” on August 15 at University Plaza from 6-10 p.m. There were several reasons why DBHM chose to take on this endeavor. First, the organization’s board members wanted the concert series to continue because these events had been the most culturally diverse events within the city. Secondly, DBHM wanted to be responsive to the call from the public to bring free music back to University Plaza. Additionally, DBHM wanted to provide non-profits with an opportunity to perform outreach at no cost. Last but not least, when DBHM realized the date it had selected for the concert was also India’s Independence Day, it decided to incorporate a Bollywood dancer performance in observance of the occasion. DBHM is proud to bring this event back to University Plaza as it furthers its mission to educate, enlighten, and support the community. Yes, the Night of Jazz will take on a different look but the spirit of the event will remain the same! Here’s to a Night of Jazz- an event that seeks to unite differences through music and strengthen our sense of community. ~ Blog entry from vwcmd.org
