More thoughts on the vote of the UNM Student Senate last night to kill the Divestment Resolution. 1) There was real leadership and creative thinking displayed when a Senator proposed the compromise amendments. 2) Since the amended resolution removed Israel and the names of specific companies, it addressed the concerns raised by pro-Israel groups. 3) Pro-divestment groups were willing to compromise for a win-win resolution. Pro-Israel groups were not willing to compromise; they said they wanted more time and ostensibly more dialogue. 4) The student Senators showed remarkable maturity and goodwill throughout the evening. 5) The pro-Israel side came to the discussion from a position of fear as demonstrated by their words. 6) The arguments made by the pro-Israel side mirror many of the arguments made by the government of Israel. 7) The pro-divestment side came from a position of strength as demonstrated by their willingness to compromise.
