Moribund Hedgehogs The weather has turned and any hedgehog mums who gave birth a few weeks ago when the weather was unseasonably hot, will now have youngsters who are in serious trouble. Moribund hedgehogs are being brought into rescue which are sadly too far gone to help. They are being presented cold, lethargic and hours from death. These hedgehogs are given the best care possible, but even with sophisticated intensive care units, medication and round the clock nursing, we may be unable to save them at this late stage. Any hedgehog seen out in daylight hours needs help. Hedgehogs seen laying on their side and sunbathing for a week need help. Tiny hedgehogs the size of your hand need help - these little ones just wont have the fat reserves to survive hibernation and will need overwintering. Please ACT QUICKY, poorly hedgehogs do not have the luxury of time and your quick thinking and actions could just be the difference between life and death. The British Hedgehog Preservation Society has a list of carers in all areas, so please, if you need help and advice or the name of a carer in your area, please give them a call. Hedgehogs are in serious decline; loss of habitat, pesticides, increased traffic, urbanisation, the list is endless. Next, we have bonfire night coming up where a hedgehog could have taken refuge inside the warm, dry woodpile. Hedgehogs face so many DANGERS, its a wonder any survive at all.
