Most dogs, often starting around the age of 10, start to get cloudiness in the lenses of their eyes (cloudiness in other areas indicates serious problems). As they age, it can get progressively worse and in some dogs, does lead to significant vision problems although usually not until they are quite elderly. Diabetic dogs can get cataracts that cause complete blindness even at a young age, and some breeds of dogs are prone to hereditary cataracts that occur when they are young. Fortunately for them, cats are more resistant to cataracts and rarely develop significant vision problems. By the way, cataract surgery can be done in pets, complete with artificial lens implants. This is a procedure we refer to ophthalmic specialists.
