Most of us are familiar with the famous biblical story of David and Goliath, but few of us know where this mythical battle took place. Even fewer of us understand why the location of this story matters. According to 1 Sam 17 the battle happened in the Valley of Elah. Goliath and the Philistines lived on the Coastal Plain, whereas David and the Israelites lived in the Hill Country further inland. Between the two lies a buffer zone called the Shephelah or the “lowland”. This area is characterized by small but steep hills, which is a challenging terrain for a battle. Despite its name, the Valley of Elah is not the kind of wide valley that you are probably familiar with where you live. It is really a wadi, a dry streambed that directs water from the Hill Country to the Mediterranean Sea during the rainy season. Because it cuts through rolling hills of the Shephelah, it creates a flat open terrain, making it an ideal setting for a battle between these two nations. Do have a wonderful time, wont you?
