Mr. Akpan called his children together and told them a story. Mr. Akpan: Story! Story! Children: Story! Mr. Akpan: Story! Story! Children: Story! Mr. Akpan: Once upon a time. Children: Time! Time! Mr. Akpan: There used to be a man named Victor. While he was a kid, he used to like toys of different kinds. Each time his dad bought a new toy for him, he always show it to his friends one after the other. He always treats those toys in a way that makes his friends looks inferior to him, especially those of them that did not have. Peter: Dad, that reminds me of how my younger brother here, Victor, used to do when he was in the nursery and primary school. Victor: That’s true dad. Mr. Akpan: But now that you’re in 200level at the university? Victor: Ah! Ah! Daddy! At least I can still remember that the last time I bordered you on toys was in the first term of my first year in the high school. Peter: I think I can testify to that too. Victor: I am working very hard now for the real thing. Toy? That’s now past tense. Mr. Akpan: Actually, both of you have helped me concluded my story, because I was actually talking about our Victor here. Peter: Daddy. Mr. Akpan: We can all see that while Victor is no longer interested in toys but the real things, Favour, the baby of the house, is still very much at home with toys. Favour: Daddy, but am still in primary five. Mr. Akpan: And no one is saying you should not play with them. Actually there is something I want to call your attention to. And I’m talking to all of you. Children: What is it dad? Mr. Akpan: I just want to let you know that anyone living his life and measures his life by this world achievement like degrees, jobs, cars, houses, connections, power and others, is just like a child that sees his toys as the best things anyone can ever have. But as he grows up, he begins to realize the difference between toys and the real assets. Just as Victor here had confirmed to us. Peter: Okay dad. Mr. Akpan: The real thing that you all as children of God should work at achieving at all cost is the kingdom of God. The moment Victor knows that toys are nothing but toys and not assets he begins to take them less serious in order to face the real thing. Col.3:1-3 says “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.” My children, I want you to know that above all your desires for anything in this world, they are just like toys when you compare them with what awaits us in His kingdom. Peter: Daddy, just pray for us to have this kind of mind you have for God. Victor: I think daddy is only interested in us making heaven and that is why he always talks about it. Mr. Akpan: That’s true my son. It is in your commitment to obeying God’s words that you can truly enjoy a fulfilled life both here on earth and in heaven. Peter: I’ve heard you dad, may God help me. Victor: and me too. Favour: May God help me too. Mr. Akpan: God bless you my children. And this is the end of my story today. STORY & SCRIPT: Abi-Abiola Oladipupo. (Hour of Reasoning Ministries)
