Mr. Rude Makes it Big in Life Three months ago, I overheard an over-achiever at the YIF talking rather curtly to another fellow. She was dismayed and upon finding me - the distant witness, she came over and muttered, So rude, he is! See, he wont be able to make it big in life. I sympathized with her with the typical Indian consolation: Forget it, hes like that only. But throughout the day, I dwelled on her remark. Why wouldnt he make it big in life? Because he is rude? I wondered how do the two things - rudeness and achievement (or making it big) - relate? Despite my dire urge to find a connection between the two, which could have made that over-accomplished fellow look small to my eyes (thus turn me happy), I couldnt find any. His being rude might hamper him in business a few times, might affect his interpersonal relationships once or twice, but to scale it to encompass his entire life is a sheer exercise of vanity. Hes the most sincere fellow in the fellowship, talks smoothly, is well-read and has all the qualities of being an excellent leader. Even after one meeting, you know this guy is going to rock whichever thing he pursues. True, he is curt at times, but it nowhere affects his abilities in getting tasks done, in being persuasive and in coming up with some really innovative ideas. In fact, his no-nonsense attitude makes the environment charged and efficient. For sure, his being nice and kind would have made him more likeable, but his not being so doesnt really affect his tenacity or talents. The claim that his rudeness wont allow him to make it big in life is nothing but a futile attempt of ego to make oneself feel better, when actually it feels bad. If rudeness really sucked up ones potential future, then I think Steve Jobs or Virat Kohli or Simon Cowell - all of them curt to the point of being rude - would have been ultimate losers. But thats not the case.
