Mt Killington did not disappoint today. Spartan World Championship 2014 you were tough but so happy to have finished this years Beast and have conquered that mountain. The start of the race was different to last year and I think most of us thought when the gun went we would be off and running downhill. A quick left turn and we were on our way up the steep ascent that is Mt Killington. My legs instantly felt heavy. Ive got the kms in my legs this year but soon realised my strength wasnt quite there or at least, I was finding the climb up harder than I remembered. This year Joe DeSena wasnt going easy. The climbs were aplenty. We travelled 14.5 miles (21km) and 7000ft. 33 obstacles of all sorts. Im a bit disappointed to have failed quite a number of obstacles. In particular the ring/ bar/ rail rig set up and different height monkey bars proved more difficult than most. Even trying to kip to reach the bar the height was far beyond my reach. The Tarzan swing is something I am yet to master. Two spears throws which neither went in. It seemed to be grip strength which became a problem.. Potentially a result of the lack of bar work Ive done lately or perhaps just fatigue. Ive done way too many burpees today. The sand bag carry was even more challenging this year, particularly for the guys. It looked like a battle field with people dropping g left right and centre. Guys had two bags and girls one.. So really felt for the guys there and managed to pass many in the elite male wave at that point. All in all good obstacles: walls, cargo, wire, tyre drag, Tarzan swing, atlas stone, spears *2, ropes, carries, bucket brigade * 2... A lot of strength obstacles!! I definitely had the kms this year but seemed to lack in leg strength on hills and grip strength for a few obstacle I pretty much always get. The last part of the course was a huge mental battle this time. We were told just around a mile left and they managed to fit in several obstacles and uphill through fallen trees and logs before returning to the finish. Somewhat sadistic end as it was clear the last climb was intended to break you from the inside out. Having said that Im really happy to have kept up a steady pace and completed the race in 29th chick and 5hrs 28 mins (just need to check that time). I definitely think there was a stronger field out in force today or possibly even just a lot of great athletes who have trained well for the terrain. This year was a tougher course for me but Ive finished in a faster time. Im stoked to have completed that Beast of a course. Time for me to get some strength training in.. All after some much needed recovery and massage. Amazing effort by all the Aussies - really committed and strong team. We were definitely up against some serious competition this time round! Well done to the place getters and all that finished! That itself is a huge achievement. A very very big thank you to Spartan Race Australia and Max Delacy and Paul Harwood for supporting the Aussie team. Thanks Spartan Race. What an adventure, what a race!
