Much as I love John Lennons Imagine, it is imagination that gives me the most despair these days. Imagine what a great country this could be. If 80% of the people here voted, we would have a liberal country that would be an inspiration. The people who do vote are usually motivated by fear, greed, ignorance, and bigotry, or some fundamental religious view that takes the Bible or some other scriptures literally. The despair of growing older is seeing the same mistake repeated, fanatics voting for reactionary politicians, Leftists talking of an imaginary Third Progressive Party of some sort and a Messiah President, and most people too wrapped up in themselves and their private, ill-informed worlds to be bothered. I am so glad I have no children to face the world the Republicans and the Tea Party are destroying. There is little I feel I can do any longer except walk on the beach, hoping not to see the trash and garbage just below the ocean surface, and to spend some quality time with friends and loved ones.
