Mucktar the man!!! I hope all you guys say thank you to him and his team, and what it means to be African Proud: Media Release!!! 9 July 2013 Down Under Athletics Championship Over 500 hundred young athletes from the United States and from around Australia competed in the Down Under Athletics Competition at the QEII stadium during the weekend. The dominance of the Americans was apparent over the three days competition and led to them winning most of the track and field events. However, the Americans dominance and confidence was shattered in the most important race - 4x1 relay which was our own local African athletes 4x1 relay team defeated the Americans. While, the Americans have the best of the best trainers and coaches, they were no match for our local boys. Our boys are trained by Fast Track Athletics under limited support and resources; but their determination, persistence and belief materialised when it matter the most on the big day. They ran a time of 42 seconds, just slightly outside the current Down Under Record. Defeating the Americans was not only a sense of achievement for our athletes, the event opened new doors of opportunities with the Americans coaches offering our athletes athletics and college scholarships to study in USA. Given the door of opportunities for our athletes to be given quality training to enhance their professional development, including education, the Queensland African Football Association (QAFA) will be organising fundraising events to support our young athletes in August after the African Athletics Carnival (AAC). The fund that will be raised from the fundraisers will go directly to their air tickets. This will enable them to compete and try out in different athletics competitions for a number of collage admissions in the United States. Your support for them means a lot and I am sure they will appreciate whatever support you can offer them which will enable them to realize their full potential and dreams of becoming professional athletes. I was privileged to meet and greet a number of the American coaches but importantly commenced building network and relationship with them. All our young people who competed in the Down Under including the 4x1 relay team will compete in the AAC on 20 July 2013. The AAC event is an opportunity for you to come and see them in action and be part of their journey. The event will be held at the QEII stadium starting at 2pm. They look forward to seeing you support them as they take on athletes from around the country.
