Murali Picks Up Green Like Only He Can Or Green By Nature – A Unique Art ShowHis art takes you to the innocence which prevailed in Kerala around 50 years ago | By Yentha On Mar 04, 2014 Trivandrum: Murali Nagapuzha paints Nature with green as the predominant colour. But we hardly see this ‘Nature’ anymore. His art depicts Nature which was prevalent in Kerala around five decades back. The lost greenery, innocence and simple beauty are pregnant in his paintings for all to see and appreciate. Murali, who received the Senior Fellowship from Ministry of Culture (New Delhi) in 2013, was born in a village near Muvattupuzha. Perhaps his childhood days in a village that was bathed in lush greenery made him what he is today. The self-taught artist’s oil-paintings are one of the most sought after works in India and even outside the country. The artist says, “The realisation that we are losing nature compelled me to draw this.” He surely represents the failing lonely voice of nature. “Murali’s paintings take you to Kerala when she was 50 years younger. The prevalent atmosphere of that age with sacred groves, greenery and simple village life are depicted in his works. Now we cannot see them in real life. Almost all such vestiges are gone. Thus his paintings are vibrant which gives an opportunity to going back to a simple world we used to have half a century ago. We miss that innocence,” says Venugopal, a reporter. He adds, “It is the evidence of his immense talent in his works which takes you back to the luxuriant greenery of erstwhile Kerala. A 30 year old may not be familiar with this kind of vibrant nature with fruits, flowers, birds and children. All are symbols of innocence.” Muralis Hornbill Painting Murali Nagapuzha with his painting M G Prakash, a medical representative, says, “He (Murali) is able to merge colours of nature in an uncompromising manner without losing its charm. Unlike other “nature” painters, every object including flora and fauna stands out. We see two paintings adjacent to each other and yet fuse into one.” Murali narrates his journey from his medical representative and trade union days to becoming today’s artist. He says, “I used to work in a trade union while I was a medical representative and was very active in politics. During that period of life, politics and art went hand in hand. Slowly, however, paintings took preference over politics. Now I am a full-fledged artist for the last 8-10 years.” He is dedicating this exhibition to the famous Malayalam poet O N V Kurup. He says about O N V, “He is the most dedicated poet when it comes to Nature. So this is for him.” The exhibition is on at the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi Art Gallery from 4 -7 March.
