Murder of Christian couple condemned The Pakistan Interfaith League (PIL) on Wednesday staged a rally in front of the National Press Club in Islamabad to condemn the killing of a Christian couple and raise voice against the extreme brutalities being meted out to the minority community, particularly targeting the Christians all over the country. A young Christian couple, Shehzad Masih and his wife Mst Shama, stated to be in their early 30s, were brutalised and were eventually murdered in the most inhuman manner when they were thrown into the oven of a brick kiln alive. The horrifying incident took place in Kot Radha Kishan in Kasur District, adjacent to the provincial capital of the Punjab on Tuesday in presence of hundreds of people. The PIL Chairman, Sajid Ishaq, who also is the Central President of the Minority Wing of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), led the procession. He said that according to the information gathered from independent as well as family sources of the victims the couple was working as labourers at the brick kiln of Yousaf Gujar in Chak No. 59 of Kot Radha Kishan. “The supervisor of the brick kiln, Mohammad Afzal had allegedly been victimising the Christian couple and the things had reached the point where both Shehzad Masih and Mst Shazia had decided to quit the job. However, they were unable to leave because they owed a lot of money to the brick kiln owner as advance,” Sajid Ishaq disclosed. He said that there rumours of other ulterior motives in the tragic case but were hard to verify. “On November 2 the couple was kidnapped. They were brought back, physically brutalised and then they were slapped with the usual allegation of desecrating the pages of the Holy Qura’an. That was enough to instigate the crowd in the village which turned violent and eventually both Shehzad Masih and Mst Shazia were thrown alive in the huge oven of brick kiln,” Sajid Ishaq said. He said that this latest incident has once again not only exposed the hatred that the minority communities are facing from the Muslim majority of Pakistan but also highlighted how easily and with impunity they could be killed under the ‘Blasphemy Law’. He said that the police, which as usual reached the crime scene when the things were already over, has registered a case under sections 302 and Section 7ATA (Anti Terrorist Act). “However, we have seen such cases registered in the past but not a single case has yet been decided with the culprits being penalised for their crimes. We demand of the government that this latest case should be proceeded under ‘speedy trial’ and all those still lying pending in different courts of law all over the country should also be decided urgently,” the PIL chairman said. At the same time, he added, the government should take effective steps to prevent such incidents happening in future and that could be done if speedy trial of the culprits booked under such cases in the past be held
