Murmansk, Russia July 1, 2014: we toured this northernmost city before entering the nuclear Naval base to set off for the North Pole; Murmansk was founded 1917 as an ice-free port in the far North of Russia where supplies could be received during World War I (although it was terribly risky and cold for the sailors); thanks to the Gulf Stream, the harbor never freezes; the city retains many items from Soviet times like their Lenin statue on Lenin Street
