Music history will be made in May and June......so music - TopicsExpress

Music history will be made in May and June......so music lovers…… Bee Gee fans…..Maurice, Robin and Andy devotees…..let’s reflect…..and think….. THERE IS A MAN…… There is a man……a very good and different man….someone God gifted with special powers, not the kind of powers that doctors who heal possess nor the powers that scientists who research possess. The likes of great visionaries are indeed rare and to be admired. These individuals are gifted in a way that is sometimes impossible to comprehend. However, the man I am thinking of possesses a different kind of power, the type of power that stands the test of many decades of scrutiny, the power to cheer when there is sadness, to bring a smile when seemingly simple sounds are heard. It could be a few notes and then suddenly a spirit is lifted, a heart is lightened, some joy is given. The power of this music soothes, thrills, excites and enriches, engaging the senses in a simple yet dynamic way. This power brought him and his brothers names of description, such as “legend”, “icon”, “poet” and “genius”, truly daunting words and tough to live up to in a changing universe where new generations take over and the icon must balance the reputation with the new visions, the instant technology, the demands of an impatient society. I think this power surely comes with burdens that weigh heavily, for who among us, having lost pieces of his soul, is ever the same? The Gibb brothers seemed to be the perfect circle, the whole, a full moon shining brightly. Yet, the circle was shattered suddenly, and then later broken again. The power was left to one, and what was to be done with it? The easy path to follow would be to shrink within and perhaps one day write for others and maybe for himself, continuing the work in a quiet way. Instead, the strong personality, the expert mind, the perfectionist, the artist, made a choice to use the power and perform once again. I ponder the reasons for this. The ego loves the spotlight, the brother gives a eulogy of music, the gentle man appreciates the sincerity of applause, the music is simply too wonderful not to sing. So that power remains strong and influential. Yes, the stage has a different look, the bittersweet memories are there, but the natural leader that always was emerges and accomplishes something uplifting, both spiritually and emotionally. Hundreds of millions of albums later, through times of loss that magnified the family bond, fans from Sydney to San Francisco, from Birmingham to Boston, still feel tied at the heart to this music. Ultimately, I feel that the power comes from love, and we fans have the opportunity to share that love in upcoming months. I see the love of the music, of his brothers, and for the journey that continues on. I think of the lyrics from one of my favorite Broadway shows, “A Chorus Line”. The song is What I Did For Love, and I honestly believe they embody Barry Gibb: “Gone. Love is never gone. As we travel on, love’s what we’ll remember. Kiss today goodbye, and point me toward tomorrow. We did what we had to do. Won’t forget, can’t regret What I did for love.” I will be honored to be a part of musical history. See you at the concerts.
