My #AfricanAthlete for this week is Nijel Amos, a middle distance runner from Botswana. Nijel’s first major success took place at the 2011 African Junior Athletics Championships, where he set a new record for the Botswana Junior Athletics time and further improving his record. In 2012 Nijel became the Worold Junior Champion for the 800m. He then went on to winning a silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the men’s 800m race. This made him the very first Olympic medal winner for Botswana. His time at the Olympic Games also allowed him to set a new World Junior Record. After struggling with injuries in 2013, Nijel returned to form in 2014, where he set a new record at the Prefontaine Classic and went on to winning gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. This is a very talented athlete, and we wish him the very best for his future. May he continue to make his country and Africa proud.
