My Friday morning was made so enjoyable with a visit to The Emporium Orchard Gateway - in my eyes, a thoughtful and excellent selection of curated multi-brand fashion and lifestyle products - set up by an amazing woman, talented designer, savvy and passionate businesswoman Sylvia Lim! I was invited to listen to the talented designer-artisan Sue Ling share with us the lovely pearls she had brought! I learnt that each pearl begins its existence as a piece of grit or other particle that makes its way into the shell of a marine or freshwater mollusk. A defense mechanism kicks-in and coats the particle with layer after layer of a substance called nacre, or mother-of-pearl, which eventually becomes thick enough to form a pearl! Sue Ling showed us different types of pearls from freshwater to baroque pearls! I must say this has fired up my interest in them :) From her website suelingjewelry -Sue Ling is now best-known for designing and handcrafting one-of-its-kind or limited edition jewellery in precious metals and gems, that are juxtapositions of contemporary design with the artisanal traditions in the craft of jewellery-making.
