My G-Great Grandfather (Great Grandfather for Teresa Carroll Hedgmon) Eugene Benjamin (Mutt) Falls, photo taken in his Confederate uniform on his 21st birthday, June 30, 1861. Now Im sure youll notice that its not what we usually consider the usual Confederate Uniform. You will notice on the hat the letters AVC. This stands for Alabama Volunteer Corp. The AVC was actually founded before the war broke out and was considered basically a state militia with the US Government supplying the uniforms. After the Succession, the new Confederate State of Alabama said, Hell, if youve got it, use it. Blue frock coat with grey pants. The tall hat is what is know as a Shako. The rakish forage caps we are familiar with are actually these caps with the cardboard supports that made them tall and straight removed. Mutt survived the war, had like 13 children and lived to 95 years old....
