My Old Flame K. Carson Kirk She’s an old love and unlike - TopicsExpress

My Old Flame K. Carson Kirk She’s an old love and unlike other loves I knew in my youth which are now unimportant memories, she refuses to fade into the past. This old flame still lights up the corners of my mind, and at the time her beauty surpassed anything that I had ever seen, and still does. I have never known contentment like when I was wrapped in her arms. God how I loved her, and I’ve always regretted leaving her there. I cried when I left to go off to World War 11 in 1944 and couldn’t wait to get back to her. She was waiting with open arms. I cried again when I left her in 1951. At the time I thought it would only be for a short while. But as of this year 2011 I have been gone for 60 long years. Oh I’ve been back to visit her several times and she always welcomes me back in her arms to sleep for as long as I want. She’s a jewel there in the Cumberland Mountains nestled up against Kentucky and Tennessee. Her mamma’s name is Virginia and she’s the County of Lee. Why did I leave her? I guess we all do things like that when we are young and foolish, and the longer you stay away the harder it is to return. I’ve crossed the Atlantic Ocean and sailed by the White Cliffs Of Dover before landing in England. After a short stay in England (21 days) I boarded a troopship to cross the English Channel to France. But on Christmas Eve 1944 a torpedo from a German U-Boat hit the ship eventually sending it to the bottom of the Channel. 800 soldiers lost their lives including two from Lee County Virginia. Survivors went on to fight and hold fifty thousand German soldiers at bay in the Lorient and Saint Nazire pockets of Northern France. After the war with Germany ended I had the privilege to swim in the Mediterranean and marveled at the beauty of the Rhine River valley of Germany and gazed at the snow -capped Alps. But I have never seen anything that can match the rugged beauty of Lee County Virginia. Yes, she’s a jewel tucked back there out of every body’s way, and always ready to forgive and take you back. That’s Lee County and you’ll never know just how much you love and miss her until you have been away for a while. GOD How I Miss Her!!!!!!
