My comment on the article Up to 3,000kg of gold being smuggled in a month, admits Chidambaram is now displayed on timesofindia. Palaniappan Chidambaram suddenly woke from his sleep and probably after a dream of Mackenna’s Gold, a 1969 western film starring Omar Sharif. In his dream he calculated 3000kg of gold is being smuggled to India in a month and therefore high current account deficit (CAD). Let us see the basis of his computation. The gold in India costs Rupees 22, 60,000 per kg; so 3000kg costs rupees 6,780,000,000! Is this a fabulous sum as compared monies the ministers make in scams and subversions? Most of these smugglers, so meanly categorized by Chidambaram, are low income NRIs from Kerala who bring little gold for the happiness their families. In all three international airports in Kerala, the NRIs are stripped, checked, and upon suspicion given medicines for lose motion immediately upon arrival from abroad and directed into the nearby toilets to empty their bellies, the abdomens. The closets are checked smelled and tasted by custom officers to make sure there are no gold coins, gold chains, bracelets and diamond necklaces inside their bodies; a strict order in Tamil by the Union Finance Minister, Palaniappan Chidambaram, the passengers are so told; while big smugglers are exempted from the search and escorted to the safety of their private cars!
