My dad was a WWII veteran and served in Germany. There was a letter I had for a long time then gave it to my brother Larry. It was a letter my dad had written home to his dad. It started out telling his dad not to share the letter with mom because it would just worry her and he was fine. It went on to describe a mission they were on and headed to one of the small German towns. Many in his unit had already lost their lives so there werent many left. He said they were cautious as they entered and it just felt wrong. They took shelter in an abandoned house in town and my dad was standing in the open doorway in the moonlight having a cigarette when shots were fired and a bullet went right through his helmet skimming past the top of his head. He didnt realize what happened at first until he took the helmet off and saw the hole. They obviously made it out of that town...according to the letter not all. Someone has a picture somewhere of dad, smiling, with his finger in that hole. I have no idea where it went...Im sure one of my siblings has it, but I remember seeing it many times growing up. When youre a kid you cant grasp how serious and frightening that must have been at the time. It doesnt matter where a soldier serves their lives are always at risk in order to protect all the freedoms we have here at home. My dad passed in 1999 and I miss him everyday...love you dad and thank you for all you did!
