My dear friend Lisa Eddie-Rimpson posted this article. I had read it just a short while before. When I went to comment and as the words were flowing through my fingertips I said to myself, Williams you need to stand up and say something. Because apparently it isn’t enough that it is the year 2013. Here are my thoughts, take em or leave em. The first thing I realized was that what I disgusted me the most about this was that I wasn’t surprised. I wasn’t surprised that some “snotty can’t afford it yourself cuz you work in retail elitist wannabe” would make that assumption. Not just make the assumption but even after the belt is bought and paid for still calls the police SURE that this young man had used a stolen bank card to make his purchase. I wasn’t surprised that someone working on 5th ave would do something like this. That saddens me and my heart is heavy. The second thing I realized is that here we have a young man who did all the right things. He is a good kid. He set a goal, worked hard, and didn’t give up until he reached his goal. This is a young man to be proud of. A young man I would be proud to call my son. And still he can’t catch a break. I too am a fan of Salvatore Ferragamo, and love his style. I know the feeling of setting your sight on something and finally reaching that Ferragamo goal. But now that sense of accomplishment and joy that was his alone is tainted and ruined. The belt no longer holds the magic it once did. So he returned it and I don’t blame him. So tonight my heart is heavy and I’m saddened by this debacle of human decency. I wish that I could say to Trayon that those petty enough to judge you by the color of your skin DO NOT define who you are. The only power they can yield is that which you give them. Ignorant is no longer a word that encompasses the depth of their willful intolerable bigotry. What kind of message are we sending to our young people of color working hard to make a difference and to do the right thing? What does this say? 100 years from now when society is looking back on us, what will be our legacy? Ugh……. I’m sorry Trayon. You did not deserve this. I am sorry that you had to bear witness to such ugliness. However, I hope that instead of resonating on their stink, that you will step around them with your intelligence. Rise above them with your character. Leap from behind them with your wisdom. Be well and know that you are already so much more than they could hope to be. If you agree please share and maybe this will reach Trayon Christian. Much Luv - Tammi
