My father was a union member and because of that made a living wage. Enough to pay the rent and put food of the table. Nowadays someone like him -- not well educated, unskilled labor, would be lucky to make $7/hour -- not enough to pay rent for a small apartment in a working class neighborhood in Brooklyn. Im lucky to have a civil service job with union benefits, and not at the mercy of a capricious employer (like I was previously) who could terminate my benefits (health coverage, paid vacation) because she could.
