My first election to vote was President Ronald Reagans second - TopicsExpress

My first election to vote was President Ronald Reagans second term. I voted for him, simply because I remember how happy he made us feel as a country AND I was 21 AND clueless about politics NOR did I want to know much about it at that age. What I do remember about my voting years in this country is the growth of division between party lines since I started voting. The growing unimaginable thought that we could work together to make this country be great but rather realistically working against one another to make this country weak. The blaming of one party for the failures of what is happening in our country. The gloating of one party taking credit for the good that is happening in this country. In 1989, 25 years ago today, we as a country were proud for and we completely stood beside a country as a single wall which divided that country came down in Berlin. I remember how exciting it was for them and how excited they were to finally be one, to be free. The transitional years that followed 1989 in that country was horrifying and chaotic but the people there were strong, determined and free to figure it out and as with any change and the freedom to create anything that a group of people wants, they evolved and they are doing so on their own terms. The wall that divides our country is not physically made of concrete and barbed wire, but emotionally, it might as well be. Over the past few days Ive wondered what it would be like to have an election in this country without using the political symbols that divides us. Hypothetically speaking, what if the election process contained political ads where the politicians only spoke about themselves and when quoting those facts about themselves they had to give credit to that source from which it came vs having to only announce they approve that ad? What if we had to look deeply into that candidates soul, without knowing his/her political status, and then we would have to decide if that particular candidates ideas ran a close parallel to our own? What if we were not given a political party choice? I know we have independent choices on our ballot and Im so grateful that we do, unfortunately, its having the political party choices that is causing the division. Without a doubt, if removing the political party status were to ever take place, I imagine like Berlin, the transitional years would be chaotic. How would the checks and balances system work in our government? It seems like it would be chaotic, but then again, the current system is extremely chaotic. If this were to actually take place in our country, I imagine as a whole we would be more productive, strong, innovative, a leader. There is a concrete wall containing barbed wire which is dividing our country and from what I can tell there are a ton of us who are standing at that wall waiting for that wall to come down. We are not hiding deep into one side of this country wanting no part of change. We are there, at that wall, wanting it torn down so that we can work together as a team to insure that all of our needs are met. Its time for that wall to be torn down, its not working, its only working to tear us apart. We dont need that! Neither did Berlin. Happy 25th anniversary Berlin on your freedom!
